Our Leaders

Our leadership exists to serve our church family through Bible teaching, prayer, encouragement and direction.

The Executive Team has authority and oversight over all things in the life and ministry of Cheil
English Ministry. The Exec. Team works together to pray, strategise, make decisions for, and care for the members of ChEMistry.

In the life of a church family, many decisions must be made: “what should our Sundays look like?”, “How should we budget? Spend?”, “How should we choose ministry leaders?”, “Which missionaries should we support?” – just to name a few.

The Exec. Team has been chosen from a group of very faithful Lifegroup leaders. Cheil English
Ministry has appointed the Exec. Team to prayerfully lead them in such a way that allows the Bible to be clearly taught, in such a way that brings God ultimate glory, and in such a way that enables His people to flourish into Christian maturity.

Pastor

Matt Kang

Matt is an ordained minister and has been the Pastor of Cheil English Ministry since 2016. He was born and raised in Sydney, and is thankful that he gets to call this beautiful city home.

He is amazed that the God of the Bible is a God of second chances – willing to forgive anyone and give them a clean slate and a new life!

Whilst living a depraved and destructive life as a young man, in 2008 Matt learned of, and received, God’s forgiveness in Jesus, and he has never been the same since. He is still in shock and wonder, that God might forgive a filthy sinner like him, and give him a brand-new identity, real purpose, and lasting joy. His deep gratitude to God led him to quit his job at the casino, and go into full-time Christian ministry.

He is very happily married to Jane, and they enjoy discovering new places, new cultures, and new foods.

Together, they welcomed their daughter Karis in September of 2022, and they are thrilled to show her God’s world, his word, and his people.

Matt currently serves as the deputy chair of the ACC, and is a founding board member of TGCAA. He trained for ministry at Sydney Missionary & Bible College.

His passion is to see churches grow healthier and more effective in disciple-making and cross-cultural evangelism.

In his spare time, he likes to watch all professional sports (especially basketball), hike mountains, and hang out with Jane and Karis.

Executive Team

Nathan Luk

Nathan serves on the Executive Team and together with his wife Jess, leads a Lifegroup. They have been married since September 2021.

Nathan is amazed that a perfect and holy God would love and save sinners like us. He is passionate about discipling new Christians and sharing the saving grace and mercy that he has received to those around him.

As part of the Exec. Team, Nathan aims to assist Matt and others in shaping and executing the vision for ChEMistry. Whether this means long term strategic planning, or short term practical goal setting, Nathan is committed to coming up with practical solutions to help grow and nurture God’s people at ChEMistry.

Outside of church, Nathan graduated in Commerce and Computer Science and is currently a software engineer for CommBank. He enjoys working on personal projects that improve others’ productivity and overall wellbeing. He also enjoys playing basketball as well as exploring, eating, and spending time with Jess.

Pastoral Assistant

Jayne Kwon

Jayne began her ministry internship at Cheil English Ministry in 2021. She has recently completed her Bachelor of Theology degree at Sydney Missionary & Bible College.

Jayne grew up in inner-west Sydney as the younger of two children. She loves coffee, music, dance, adventuring in nature and talking about the NBA (basketball). She also loves showing people the beauty and majesty of Jesus through opening the Bible.

When Jayne became a Christian in 2016, she realised there was nothing more urgent than people coming to see Jesus for who he is and what he’s done to offer forgiveness and eternal life. This motivated her to go into vocational ministry – with the hopes that God might use her to help people know and love Jesus.

Her passion is to see more people in Sydney get keen to pray for, and work amongst, the people around the world who don’t have any access to this life-changing news of Jesus.

Executive Team

Sarah Ahn

Along with Matt, Sarah is a council member of Sydney Cheil Church. In addition, she oversees our Kids’ Church, and along with her husband Eddie, leads a Lifegroup.

Sarah also serves as a board member for Sydney Hosanna Mission and Hosanna Gardens Academy (a school in Kenya). She trained and worked as a primary school teacher, but is currently studying theology at Sydney Missionary & Bible College.

Her real full-time job however, is raising her two beautiful boys, and being a supportive wife for her wonderful husband Eddie (who she has known for more than half her life!)

She is constantly humbled by the fact that God sent his son Jesus, to take her place on the cross so that she can call God “Father”. Sarah is passionate for children, education, global mission, and longs to serve King Jesus all the days of her life.

Sarah also has a sweet tooth, and A LOT of tears! She likes to go out to eat yummy food (especially Japanese and dessert) but also loves to cook meals for people in her home.

Executive Team

Sylvia Zhang

Sylvia is a member of the Executive Team and has called Cheil English Ministry home since 2017. In addition to her role in the ET, with her husband Matt, Sylvia leads a Lifegroup and is passionate about seeing Christians grow deeper in their knowledge and love for God’s Word.

Having grown up in a non-Christian home, Sylvia was shocked to hear about a God that not only knew her by name, but loved her and died for her despite her sinfulness. By God’s grace, Sylvia came to know of the amazing grace and goodness that is in Jesus and she committed her life to Him in her third year of university.

She is happily married to Matt and together they love to explore new op shops, eat yummy food and experiment with different coffee beans for their coffee machine at home. During the week, Sylvia is busy figuring out Excel shortcuts in her role as an IT auditor.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

– Jesus (Mark 10:45)

Ministry Directors

The “engine room” of ChEMistry is made up of ministry teams. Our three main teams are: Kids’ Church, Music Team, and the Creative Team.

Ministry directors oversee the recruitment, training, and the healthy functioning of those three teams.

Kids' Church

Music Team

Jane Kang

Jane serves as the Music Director of Cheil English Ministry.

She is primarily responsible to help the church build a vibrant, healthy and biblically-faithful music ministry. She believes that congregational singing and preaching are both important Word-ministries, and songs that are not only theologically rich, but easily singable – are an integral part of our Sunday gatherings.

When Jane understood that Jesus is the living God who conquered sin and death once and for all, her life changed. Jesus became her Saviour, her King, and her life in whom she lives for, loves, and serves.

Jane is formally trained as a Music Teacher, but later retrained as a Special Education Teacher. She is currently teaching at a school in the north-shore area of Sydney.

Jane has a passion for disability ministry, and for song writing – particularly songs based on Scripture, and songs that are suitable for congregational singing.

She loves to go for walks in nature (preferably in the “golden hour”), read books, and enjoy good food and coffee with her friends and family.

Jane is happily married to Matt and has a daughter named Karis.

Creative Team

Josh Wyatt

Josh leads the Creative Team at Cheil English Ministry. The team is responsible for all things creative: social media, this website, Sunday slides, lights, sound engineering, podcasting, and design – just to name a few.

On a deeper level though, the Creative Team exists to reflect the beauty and majesty of the greatest Creator of all – our heavenly Father. Everything is crafted with intention with the purpose for Sunday service to be a welcoming, distraction-free environment for everyone to engage with God and His people – through His word.

Josh met his wife Jaime in 2014 whilst both serving in a media ministry team at another church. Monday to Friday, Josh participates in his own boutique creative and production company, finding ways to create stories through filmmaking.

His hope is that the timeless message of the saving grace of the Gospel can be heard and re-heard in the many contexts we find ourselves in today.

In his spare time, Josh binge watches Netflix series and is learning how to garden (plus all other husband duties).

Operations

Through week to week requirements of ChEMistry, our operations keep us organised, on time, and on budget.

Administrator

Alice Jeon

Alice is the administrator at Cheil English Ministry. She was born and raised in Sydney and works as a neonatal ICU nurse.

Alice feels it is a great privilege to be able to see God working so powerfully in and through the lives of those who have met Jesus at Cheil English Ministry.

In her spare time, she is either finding new places to eat, playing volleyball, or spending time with her kitten.

Treasurer

Tina Li

Tina began attending Sydney Cheil Church in 2012 after being invited by a friend and later understood her need for a saviour when she realised that sin is not a moral right or wrong but the defiance of God.

Tina serves as the Treasurer of Cheil English Ministry. She firmly believes that God has entrusted his money to us, and she believes that the role of the treasury is to help the church steward these resources faithfully, and to use them effectively to build up His Church.

During the week, Tina works in the regulatory space for banks.

Tina is astounded by how through Jesus we are able to gain citizenship to the eternal Kingdom of Heaven: one which transcends beyond cultures and borders, a kingdom where individual economic status, or personal upbringing make no difference.

Tina enjoys listening to music, exploring new food places (and revisiting old ones), and taking naps. She loves dogs, but does not love coriander.

I'm not a Christian, can I come?

Anyone and everyone, regardless of faith / political / ethnic / cultural background – is always welcome at ChEMistry!

Who leads?

Our Sunday services are led by one of our leaders. The singing is led by our Music Team, and the sermon is always delivered by a trained Christian minister or a theologically qualified person.
