Jerry's Story

What is one thing you have learned in your struggles with mental health?

If this “thorn” is what I need to remain close to God, then may He keep it in so that I do not stray from the narrow path.

I have found it difficult at times to reconcile my faith with my anxiety and depression. Mental health struggles are difficult to talk about. They make you feel weak, vulnerable and helpless. Day in and day out your own battles with the dark, lingering thoughts in your mind leave you little energy to focus on other things, such as work and class, let alone prayer and Bible reading.

It would be hypocritical of me to tell those struggling with mental health to fall on your knees and give it all up to God, because I myself have difficulty doing this. It would be insensitive of me to tell those struggling with mental health to just trust in God’s plan, because I know there’s more to that textbook answer. But in my own battles with anxiety and depression, both past and present, I have come to know that whilst Christ isn’t always the answer we seek, he is the answer we need.

In all the testimonies you will ever hear, you will come to see that it isn’t each person’s unique struggle that defines them, but rather the redemptive way in which God uses our struggles to bring us more of Him.

In 2 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul talks of a “thorn in his flesh,” an instrument of God that keeps him dependent on Christ. In light of eternity, the humbling truth is that our dependence on Christ must outweigh our earthly comfort. If this “thorn” is what I need to remain close to God, then may He keep it in so that I do not stray from the narrow path.

I do not know if I will ever get over my mental health problems in this lifetime, but I have the full confidence that there is coming a day where Christ will make it no more, and that brings me joy. If you are struggling with mental health, please reach out to someone. God designed our lives to be done in community, and in that we are to lovingly carry each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). If you don’t know who to talk to, I am always an open door, all you have to do is send me a message 🙂
