Jess's Story

What has God been teaching you about marriage?

Christian marriage doesn’t mean that your life will be perfect…

There are many blessings and gifts that God has given to us in marriage, but at the same time, there are also many hills, learning curves and experiences that God uses to grow His children. Within the last 6 months of marriage, God has taught me many things, the 3 main points being…

Don’t hold in an unloving feeling or unforgiveness towards my husband - As God reminds me in His Word, when I come to Him and seek forgiveness, He is always ready and willing to forgive and accept me with open arms. As such, I should reflect the same forgiveness and grace that I’ve received through Christ to my husband and throughout my marriage. I should be quick to forgive, love and show grace like God does, even if I don’t feel like it.

Be patient – It’s so easy to be impatient towards my husband especially when I feel so comfortable around him.

Ephesians 4:2 reminds me, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Reminding myself of God’s patience and mercy towards me helps me to be patient, loving and understanding towards my husband even when it is difficult.

We’re still two broken sinners in need of God’s grace and mercy - I get so caught up with the expectations I have (and God has) of my husband, but God continually teaches me that I too am just as much in need of God’s mercy and grace and that it is ultimately God that works in my husband and grows his faith and maturity. I’m reminded to trust in God’s sovereignty, authority and His promises to grow and care for His people.

Christ died on the cross that I might be able to spend an eternity with Him and I am reminded of this truth daily.

May I continue to love and serve my husband sacrificially as I reflect upon the greatest marriage between Christ and His church!”

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." (Colossians 3:12)
